Today, I want to share some of my secrets for shooting steppers video for those who are curious how to capture the excitement of steppin along with the dance.
It is not as easy as turning on a video camera and pointing it at some dancers.
My advice is to know the six count and eight count. Learn the dancers and familiarize yourself with dancers you often film with the ability to anticipate their movements to get the best shots. Take as many angles as possible without remaining stationary or in what I call the tripod position. Use the rule of third and proper framing, never ever placing the dancers in the center of the frame for any lengthy period of time which creates boredom.
One of my favorite secrets is to tape up close and personal, coming in as tight as possible so the viewer not only see the dance but experience it though if right out on the floor. Film high, low or on the center where most hand control takes place, zooming and or panning in or out.
I never record a steppers video without definition, defining some aspect of the dance or some new approach to the dance. Otherwise, the video is just two people dancing.
Last, Always capture steppers video with the understanding that people want to experience the dance through the dancers in front of them but not simply watch people dancing. This concludes the latest Steppers video tips and tricks from Dan Land.
Remember. Steppers video is an art form. Peace and God Bless you. Dan Land
